Cisco’s ASA5505 was a workhorse for the small business/advanced consumer market. As I upgraded to the Cisco ASA5506-X, I have found that the 5506 is as capable and reliable as its’ predecessor. The ASA5506-X is fast, compact, and excellently suited as a perimeter firewall for the SOHO market. There are a few notable differences between the 5505 and the 5506 which a new user should know – primarily, that the eight ports on the 5506 are not switch ports (as were the 5505) but layer 3 routing ports. To get the full benefits of the 5506, you’ll need to place a switch behind the 5506. While I was initially put off by this change, upon reflection and after several months of use, this change appears to be a benefit, allowing physical separation of networks while reducing the load on the 5506. IMO, the ASA5506-X is a winner and a valuable addition to your network.

Wonderful upgrade to our prior firewall. Very strong product with a rich admin panel. We’re a small business with a staff of ~25 and this really helped keep our environment secure and effective. Would definitely buy again if we needed one.

I have read a lot of complaints on the 5506. The GUI isn’t much different from the 5505. Some of the background is different. One thing is that if you are trying to set this up while connected to your internet… Don’t! Configure it the way you want it and then plug it into the network and internet. It was a very smooth transition.
