I gotta hand it to Netgear, they really designed this device to make it easy to install.WARNING: The antennas are delicate. They’re plastic and won’t withstand being accidentally hit so be sure you find a good place for the device that’s out of the way but has good air flow before you install everything.I’d just upgraded my modem a few minutes before installing this device and I was holding my breath. The modem installation went so smoothly, I thought I was bound to encounter issues installing this device. Nothing ever went smoothly with previous internet gear upgrades in my past, but it’s been about 6 years since I’d bought anything new. I was due.I unboxed everything and followed the instructions on the leaflet. Installation required a phone app which I’d already loaded since I own a Netgear wifi amp.The step by step instructions were so simple, an elementary school kid could follow them. No joke. My setup allowed me to follow it without fail. The setup of the router was done in well under 15 minutes and that includes unboxing and finding the wall outlet behind my file cabinet that was tricky to get to.I’m a huge fan of Netgear and always have been even when settings were relatively manual. I’m now a fan for life.

If you’re savvy on home networking, and even if you’re not, this router is an absolute stud. I’ve had issues receiving true Gig downspeeds for over a year, and honestly I should have upgraded a while ago. But, I’m actually glad I have something to compare too. This thing is a beast. Easy to program, and runs flawlessly once programmed and firmware is upgraded. Windows gave me issues at first due to all the security problems Windows 10 has with new hardware and WiFi routing, but the newest Win 10 upgrades, Intel AX200 driver upgrades and NetGear Firmware this thing flies. I’m programmed for Router mode with my main modem as a bridge. IPV6 is enabled and supported by my ISP. The speeds this thing puts out are literally unreal.Easy to install, almost plug and play. Highly recommend. Especially for those heading towards the “Smarthome” vibe. I’m currently supporting 40+ IoT devices on this thing, and the processing speeds are killing it. The Tri-Band is an absolute must! Hardline for gaming of course. Recommend CAT6+. 5E will only give you half the 1G speeds.

This is a great router and you will be happy you own one. It has a great range and covers my entire home from one location. It handles way more devices then I will ever own to connect to it. My cell phone is my home hotspot so we have no landlines. If you can afford a few extra pennies I highly recommend this router. You get multiple frequencies to cut down on interference and it puts the speed to the device that needs it currently. It is well made and feels solid. So many features you will never need them all but it will have the ones you need!I gave a short review because this router has everything you want with no cons to it – except for a high price. You get what you pay for. If you just surf the net this router is overkill. If you game, stream, surf and do other things and have a family that also does them all at once and need a long range, you should already have this router.

I had a Nighthawk, the version before this. I bought it used and it was awesome. It lasted for about 5 years and then quietly passed away. I tried replacing it with one of the NETGEAR – Nighthawk RAX45 AX4300 WiFi 6 Router from Costco, and that was absolute junk, it would barely get signal to my computer in the basement. I returned that to Costco and bought the $400 Orbi system. It’s amazingly dumb, devices that are 3 feet away from a satellite connect to the base unit instead. All of my 2.4ghz items ran very poorly and were extremely unstable. I purchased this router and swapped it out for the Orbi system. After putting this router into service and seeing how well it performed, I returned the Orbi system. I will still with this “old” technology which seems to work a heck of a lot better than any of the new stuff. I have a 2700 square foot house that has a basement. This router reaches everywhere and is fantastic.

We used to use a Wi-Fi router we got from T-Mobile years ago due to low cell signal. It did a great job until we moved to a bigger house and we started to notice weaker signals but it was still good enough. It finally started acting up and loosing signal all the time. My wife works from home so she needs reliable signal as she likes to move around and work in the balcony sometimes. Spectrum blamed it on our router so went and picked up their provided wireless router. It had no antennas so we were not able to direct our signal where we wanted it. The range was very minimal, there was a drastic drop from one side of the house to the other. We finally got fed up with it after our security cameras kept bugging out and everything pointed to poor signal.Nighthawk is brand I would see everywhere so I figured they must have great products. We saw the R6900P was at towards the bottom of the middle range but at the time Amazon had a 20% off coupon so it would equal just a little bit more than the models underneath it so we made the jump. According to the description this router would be able to handle what we require. It was night and day between the Nighthawk and both our old router and the Spectrum router. I had signal out to the street, speeds were about 50% faster across the board on 2.4 but the kicker was the range on the 5G!! Triple digits across the whole house. Our Spectrum router only pushed 5G in the living room and the master room which was directly above it.In conclusion, stop throwing away your money to your ISP for a crappy router, upgrade your old router, and upgrade. We paid about $80 for this router after the 20% sale Amazon had but even at regular price it would have been worth it. I know this series has different models depending on Sq Ft so if you don’t need 1800sqft then you can save some money getting a smaller range.

NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S AC4000 Tri-Band WiFi Router (R8000P) is excellent gigabit router. I bought it brand new $179.49 in September 2019 and I fall in love with it at the moment of unboxing. Even though the user manual provides useful information on how to manage this router, however the users must have advanced knowledge to discover ton of its awesome features.I specifically like the stabilization of this router, the only router I’ve ever used that could run from day to day without overheating or connection drop. Auto firmware update will keep you free from security threads, you may “set and forget” to spend your time on your work, your life and your loved ones.Another awesome feature is Smart Connect – Let the router select the best WiFi band for our WiFi connections. With Smart Connect, we can use the same WiFi network name (SSID), security options, and password for all radios for which we enable Smart Connect. It is awesome to have only one Wireless Network Name (SSID) for 2.4G and both 5G radios.Another awesome feature is available on NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S AC4000 is ReadySHARE USB that lets you plug in even more capabilities and convenient features through your router’s USB port. These include USB storage you can wirelessly access at home, free software to easily backup your PC or Mac, wirelessly printing from any PC or Mac and the ability to play, view, listen to, and share your videos, photos, and music on DNLA connected TVs, game consoles, or media players.Last but not least, if you place your other banded router in your bedroom, your sleep may be bothered by the router led indicator. With NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S AC4000 Tri-Band WiFi Router you will never have that issue, there’s a small switch in the back side of the router to turn off all the led lights except the power indicator.I have 36 devices connected to this router at home 24/7, both wired and wireless, some of them are high bandwidth usage like 4K TV and security cameras, I have no connection issue at all with NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S AC4000 Tri-Band WiFi Router. Buy it and you will never regret spending money on this wonderful router.

We have quiet a few items that connect to the internet in my household and I needed reliable router to handle the traffic. I also need something to assist with my multiple storage drives. The Netgear Noghthawk X6S AC4000 Trim-Band WiFi Router (R8000P) was what caught my eye. I has everything that I needed plus more. The ability to access my storage remotely is a plus, however I really like the built in protection feature called NETGEAR Armor (Bitdefender Antivirus) which is a 30 day trail. I purchased the one year protection renewable option. I am familiar with Bitdefender and it is a strong antivirus program. Because NETGEAR has intergrated this into their router makes it a valuable and well suited router for the Home and small Business. Needless to say I am very impressed with this router and recommend it to my friends and family.

We’ve been having terrible Internet connections with our Spectrum for about a year and it only got really bad this last week…….we’re supposed to be getting “up to” 200 Mbps but have never gotten that…..we used to get around 118 Mbps, until early last year (2020) when it dropped to an average of 70 Mbps and never went much higher than that, often being even lower. We tolerated the slow speed all this time because it was still faster than our DSL, which by comparison, is practically dial-up (.6 to 1.1 Mbps)……whenever Spectrum loses its connection, we have to switch over to the DSL which is really only good for two people doing a little surfing and email…..NO streaming, NO video conferencing, etc. This past week (July 2021) our Spectrum connection has been constantly disconnecting on top of the slow speeds…………….all I could get out of Spectrum is that our area is experiencing “outages” but they “are working on the issue”…….there was no reason given for the problems.I had already been thinking about upgrading our 10-year old Cisco/Linksys D3000 router and replacing the Spectrum issued modem, so in addition to an Arris SB6190 Surfboard modem, I got this NETGEAR Nighthawk Smart Wi-Fi Router (R6900P) – AC1900 Wireless Speed router……………I figured I would see if they could possibly improve our Internet connection in the slightest, at least with the speed…….since the “outage” problem was with Spectrum.I just installed both over the last two days, installing the Surfboard SB6190 modem first……..our Internet Speed doubled….to around 151 Mbps, which I thought was great! However, the next day (yesterday) after swapping the Linksys E3000 router with the NETGEAR R6900P, we had instant improvement of our Internet speed, above what improvement I saw with the modem the day before…….by almost 4x what we were getting over the last year!No joke, we went from about 70 Mbps (right before I swapped the modems and over a year before that) to an average of 240 Mbps……I’ve been checking it often for the last 24 hours……I’m still shocked at the speeds I’m seeing.Of course, I can’t help wonder if there was some miracle at Spectrum that happened that dramatically increased our Internet speed at the exact same time that I changed the router, especially since we’re still experiencing off and on disconnects. The only thing I can think of that could be increasing our Internet speed is that I have this Nighthawk set to WPA2/PSK AES security and I may have had our 10-year old Linksys E3000 set to use both WPA/PSK TKIP & AES, which could result in slower speeds (because of the TKIP), but I’ll need to see if I had saved any of the previous settings for reference to confirm.BTW, it was super easy to swap the routers, I just copied all of our same passkey & router name info, including No SSID Broadcasting as I always set previous routers, all of which was an option in the Setup process, to make the transition smooth for all of our connected devices, including the Ring® doorbell & NETGEAR Extender downstairs and it went very well! (I always disable SSID Broadcasting for added security……it does NOT prevent devices from connecting wirelessly if the correct SSID & passkey is entered and saved on the device…..by disabling the SSID Broadcast, our neighbors can’t see our router’s name or that it even exists). In fact, the NETGEAR NightHawk R6900P is using both 2.4GHz & 5GHz simultaneously, something that our Linksys E3000 was supposed to do, but never really did (I could tell on the admin screen for the E3000 that it was always broadcasting 5G, which it should still do, if even no devices are connecting through it).The only small issue is with logging into the router’s settings, all of my previous routers over the last 20+ years, I’ve been able to assign the router’s User Name and Password, but with the NightHawk, I can only change the router’s password, you cannot change the User Name from “admin”, which seems odd to me.Otherwise, as of installing this router 24 hours ago, I’m completely impressed, however, if anything changes, I will update my review.Note: in one of the two photos, you’ll see the fourth LED from the right is orange/amber……that was indicating that one of the PCs I have hooked up to the router via ethernet was at 100Mbps vs 1000Mbps or gigabit……that PC was not powered on and hadn’t been since installing the Nighthawk, but as soon as I powered it up, it went to white.

I bought this one because of a couple of friends recommended it. I was sharing a modem with a family of 5, three of which are gamers like me. Lag was the number one problem followed by disconnections from our gaming servers. I was constantly resetting the modem, but when I bought this router, all my problems went away! Lag is gone and I haven’t been kicked from the server since! This thing is super easy to install. It’s probably the most user friendly router you could buy. Just download the Netgear Nighthawk app and its self explanatory from there. It gives you step by step instructions and completely dummy proof. You don’t have to be a computer geek to install this thing. I would say the range can be rather difficult to evenly distribute so you will need to buy a longer Ethernet cable to centralize the router in your home so that all rooms will get even connections to the internet.Hope my review helps!

  10. Jim

Had an older Netgear router that couldn’t handle all the streaming traffic after I cut the cable cord. Decided to go with the Nighthawk X6S AC4000 based on all the reviews I read. The reviews weren’t wrong!! Without changing my internet service provider and only switching to this new router, my download speeds went from a typical 50-54Mbps download to 450-480Mbps download. Unbelievable performance. The old router also used to routinely drop the connection for my cameras as well due to the speeds but since installing this new router a week ago, nothing has dropped yet (fingers crossed). There are a few “quirks” that I’m not too happy about but can live with. First, the old Netgear app that supported my old router had a Network Map function which displayed how all currently connected devices were laid out; the new Nighthawk app doesn’t have this feature. Secondly, there’s a glitch between the Nighthawk app and the web based router setup. Through the Nighthawk app, each connected device can be edited to specify what each is based on pre-configured choices (tablet, smartphone, bridge, etc…). The web based router interface has different labels for all connected devices (iPhone, iPad, Windows Computer, etc…). If you specify on the Nighthawk app that a device is a “smartphone” and then log into the web based router interface, the device is listed as “unknown type”. If you specify a device as an “iPhone” in the web based router interface and then log into the Nighthawk app, the device is listed as “Unknown Type”. Would be VERY helpful if Netgear could sync both the Nighthawk app and the web based router interface to use the same terminology for devices so they are setup once and listed properly no matter which interface you use.Thirdly, there’s another glitch in the setup process (on both the Nighthawk app and the web based router interface) when enabling the remote access feature. If enabled on the web based router app, it fails a few times and then goes through fully enabling remote access. When trying to enable remote access on the Nighthawk app, it fails all the time and says it’s not enabled, even though the web based router interface shows remote access is enabled (and after successfully accessing router remotely through internet).Again, these are all minor glitches that hopefully Netgear will address in future app releases and firmware updates. But overall, just based on the significant improvement in download speeds and uptime reliability, this is the best router I’ve ever owned (and this is probably my 10th router in the past 20 years; having tried multiple Linksys, Netgear, and Belkin routers over the years).
