This hub is my 3rd USB 3.0 hub from Atolla. It has plenty of power for all my devices, it has a charging port but most of all you can turn on/off any of the USB ports. My computer stays on overnight for backup to the cloud and some USB devices that I use don’t have an “off” switch. So I use the on/off switch per port to turn them off. The Atolla USB 3 hubs have proven fast and reliable thus far.

I ended up buying this but I purchased it with questions, none of the other reviews seemed to answer my questions so here are my unanswered questions that have been answered.Do you need to use this with the plug? You don’t you can just connect it to your computer and your computer can power it. But if you have a portable monitor like I do you may need to plug it in for extra power. OR if you have a game system that needs a powered storage bank like a Wii U, you can use this to give it enough power to use on your Wii U.Can I just use the plug and not plug it into a computer? You can use it as a type of charger for your usb charging needs. the only reasons why you would plug it into your computer is if you need to use a device such as a wireless usb mouse, a usb monitor, putting music on your phone etc. The usb cord is useful on the hub is useful for getting you the connectivity to the computer if you need it. You can use this hub anywhere in your house. You don’t have to use it with a computer. But if you are you need to plug the usb cable into your computer so that your mouse, phone, monitor etc can connect to it.The usb cord doesn’t seem long enough. It works great with a usb extender. I have several just in a drawer because you never know when you can use one and you usually need one when you don’t have one. The hub works with extenders as well. my monitor is pluged into the hub with an extender which is plugged into my computer and works fine.My other thoughts on this is that it really works great. It’s one of the most compact hubs I’ve ever seen and it allowed me to really organize my mess of wires. I only have two usb ports on my lap top and was using a hub running off of another hub. This really takes away the clutter and adds functiionality because not all hubs will connect to your computer. Some hubs will only charge your usb items. So make sure if you want to use this with any other device that needs to work on your computer, make sure you buys this!

From the picture I thought this was larger than it actually was, which in my opinion is a good thing. I plugged it into a USB 3.1 port and plugged the power brick in which took up a lot of space in my power strip, I would have rather had a laptop style power adapter with the brick in the middle but it is what it is and I don’t think it was worth taking off a star. Just be mindful that you will need that space.I plugged in several USB flash drives and they were immediately recognized and worked fine, when I got to my 256 GB flash drive it didn’t work at all period and I tried every port on top. I also tried several USB Hard drives and I noticed that some worked and others didn’t. This is not a big deal for me personally because I mainly got this to have better access to the ports on the back of my computer and the drives that work with it are now permanently living in the hub. I can still use the ports on the front of my computer for the devices that don’t work with it, so it is a good compromise.I suspect although USB 3.1 drives should be backward compatible with USB 3.0 which is just USB 3.1 generation one, that for some reason my USB 3.1 which are generation 2 don’t seem to work with this hub.

I had so many peripherals connected to my PC Tower/Server that it would freeze on boot-up. I also had a USB line connected to a large safe for the data storage drives located inside the safe. After some research, I ordered two of these highly rated, Atolla, powered hubs. I removed all of the USB connections from the PC Tower/Server and connected everything directly to this self powered USB hub. I then connected the input of this self powered USB hub, to the USB connection on the PC Tower/Server. I placed the second of these Atolla, powered hubs inside our safe. There, it presently powers three data storage drives and allows for future expansion. This solved all of my USB problems with virtually no power drain on the system’s internal USB ports. This hub will work without plugging in the included wall-wart, power supply. However the added power boost of the AC connection makes everything work better. The individual power switches on each USB port is a great feature. One can turn off the unused ports. I can only see 2 negatives in the design. I wish that it had an in-line power supply with a regular electric cord. The included wall-wart, power supply is large and difficult to plug in to a power strip with other items. I also wish that the hub would automatically shut off when the computer is turned off and/or when there is no USB signal feeding the hub. In self powered mode, it stays on 24/7, which translates in to your USB peripherals being continually powered. Over all, this a great product. It is a major upgrade to any computer. Update: After using these self-powered hubs for a while, I would offer a tip. They do a great job but when using more than one hub connected directly to the same computer, I had a little glitch on boot-up. The problem was eliminated by feeding the second, self powered hub, from one of the USB ports on the first self powered hub. (daisy-chained) This worked much better than having both hubs connected directly to the same computer.

Received Powered USB Hub 3.0, Atolla 7-Port USB Data Hub Splitter and so far have nothing but praise regarding this product. Not sure of all the details of those individuals that have had problems with this product but I have put all 7 ports to the connectivity test without any issues over the past few days.I have transferred many files between my configured drives without any issues. Based on the drive type yes there are times where the transfer rate is slow, but the hub itself is not slowing down the transfer IMO. I do not have any stats for my file transfers but what I can tell you is that I have 7 drives that are stable connected to my HP Pravillion running 1TB HDD and 8 GB of RAM. No drive connected to the Atolla ever have dropped of connection or caused problems so far.I will update this post if I have any issues with this Hub that cause me to change my opinion of this product, given I have only had it for also a week.Product is made of durable plastic and has a long heavy power cord. The switches feel strong enough and turn on/off with one minimal push. Regarding travel with this product, I have no need to travel with it as I have a J5 Create for that purpose but this product should travel nicely if taken care of.My configuration is as follows:WD 2TB Elements driveWD 1TB Passport driveWD 1TB MYBookWD 500GB MYBookSanDisk Extreme 2TBUSB Memory Stick 4GBUSB Memory Stick 4GB

Before I get started into fully talking about this, know that there are two types of these devices from various brands, unpowered and powered, the latter being used or included with an AC adapter to ensure you are getting enough power to the devices connected like you would if your device was connected directly to your PC USB port, except it has to split one into multiple ports, and only so much energy can be drawn from a single port, so you most definitely want something which is powered with an AC adapter like this.Build: I’ll start out by saying that the build quality is fairly nice, it isn’t made out of metal or anything, but the ports and buttons are very tactile and responsive, the whole device seems fairly sturdily made, and it’s got a nice thick gauge USB cable. The device could maybe be a tiny bit less lightweight for stationary reasons, since it does slide back and forth a little when you move or pull your cords in different directions, or the thick wire just drags it, however, the overall build of everything including the unit, ports, buttons, and necessary wires are satisfactory.Function: The buttons mentioned are on/off switches for the each USB port, giving you the option to cut off certain ports, each have an LED directly under them indicating whether they are on or off, sometimes the LEDs of the other ports shine through the ports that are not turned on but you can still tell whether they are on or off just by the brightness and location of the LED for each corresponding port, which all of them are located just under each port in the second picture showing three at the top inactive, yet the inactive topmost having a lot of light shine through from the active topmost port, and the bottom three showing bright active LEDs just below the ports inside the translucent plastic surrounding each port when they are turned on. The blue LEDs themselves are very nice to see not only for the individual ports and their on/off status, but makes the device really stand out on whatever you have it placed on. That being said, the LEDs are too good that they can be a bit distracting, blinding and make it difficult to see which direction you are plugging the cords in; I suppose turning the individual port off first helps. Overall, I really enjoy the LEDs. To shut off an individual port, the button corresponding to the port needs to be held down for a second or so, and to turn on, just simply press it.Functionality: Straightforward, you plug the device into one USB 3.0 on your motherboard with its thick gauge USB cable, and it splits into a 7 port brick, giving you more ports to plug more devices into when there’s not enough, or you just want or need more. On the front of the device there is a separate USB charging port shown in the third picture, only reserved for charging devices and no data transfer, so I do not recommend plugging anything other than a phone, tablet, or any portable device that you need to just charge and nothing else. Charging my phone is fairly satisfactory for USB, it’s just a bit less than a wall adapter but not as slow as plugging straight into a standard USB port, I’m assuming because of the included adapter, and possibly separate circuitry from the other ports reserved for just charging.Looks: I really like it, a little bulky for just the thought of having a few extra ports, maybe limiting how you want it placed exactly, but it really does work nicely when put into perspective. The bright blue LEDs, the brick design that just sits there telling you “this is THE hub where you plug everything you need in” on a desk makes it a nice USB station to have with the convenience of not having to reach around for ports or worry about not having enough, however, the fact that the USB ports have to be on top means that big cables have to bend while standing upward, while they are making it a bit awkward not only because of how they are placed but the positioning of wires/devices being affected.Portability: I would say to skip this, since it’s pretty obvious why this is by no means meant for portability, but you could probably use this maybe on the go if you have a laptop, a bunch of devices, and a place to stay for a little bit with an extra wall socket, but other than that, laptops probably have enough ports for the amount of devices with short enough cable lengths you are likely to take with you wherever. This is not meant for portability but a hub/station for desktop users, plain and simple, however, by no means is there a rule you cannot use it with a laptop. Conclusion: It is a great concept, convenient, well-made, and extremely useful if you have extra USB, especially v3.0 devices that need more ports and be properly powered with the included 5V/4A AC adapter.Thank you.

This is the third Atolla Hub I’ve owned and they are all great. They have become my primary USB hub brand of choice. My first one is used in my car and has never had connection issues. My second one powers my wife’s various electronics on her nightstand and she has said they have never given her problems. This one just replaced my Amazon Basic USB 3.0 hub which finally (after 2 years) started giving me connection problems. The build and materials all feel like high quality. What sets this apart from other high quality hubs are the on/off buttons that allow you to “disconnect” things without having to remove them from the hub — it’s a killer feature that I’m surprised other manufacturers haven’t copied yet. Can’t go wrong with this purchase.

I’ve used hubs for years – especially since I have several laptops and, at most, they have three USB ports, while I have 4 or more drives or connections I need to make. This simplifies the process by providing seven hubs AND a charging hub. What separates this from all the others I’ve purchased is that EACH PORT HAS AN ON/OFF SWITCH! Why is this important? If you’ve ever been somewhere where you had to reboot your computer for any reason and only had a limited amount of time for it to reboot, having one or more 1TB or larger external drives means that your computer scans ALL the drives before it boots up. By being able to simply turn off that port (rather than pulling the plug) means you can control that process easier. That’s just one reason.Another feature is that each port lights up when it’s turned on, letting you know at a glance which drives or ports are connected and which aren’t. Not little LED’s that usually end up facing away from you on other hubs and having you guess which one applies to which drive; no, this one lights up around each USB connection you plug into with a soft blue light makes knowing which one is working a breeze. And, if you’ve ever had problems with the hubs slipping and sliding off your desk or off the coffee-shop table and falling on the floor a little velcro on the bottom to a.) secure it to your desk or, b.) secure it to the lid of your laptop, makes it a stable plug-in for your USB’s.But, man, I love the on/off feature!

I have the 7 port USB 3.0 connected to a USB 3.1 Gen 1 port. I have been able to connect two WD Passports one a 2TB and the other a 4TB. I transferred a 100GB mixed set of files from the 2TB to the 4TB While this transfer was going on at USB 3.0/Hard Drive speeds I also had a Samsung 850 Pro 1 TB in an HDE Clear USB 3.0 Gen 1 external case running a full crystaldiskmark6 benchmark test running. No hiccups at all the benchmark was as expected High 400 Read and Low 400 write. I have no idea how long this will last it appears well made for your basic 7 port USB 3.0. This is what I was looking for in a 7 port hub. So many would just lock up just having the two external hard drive hook up much less transferring 100GB of files. The built-in cable is heavy USB 3.1 Gen 2 type wire so be aware of that if you don’t need to use for large data transfersI guess the only con would be the brightness of the blue LED’s and they do bleed over to the port next to them but only on the side next to it so you can tell that the port is turned off.I will revisit this review should anything change in the next few months.2020-05-03 my first on is still working great and I have purchased 2 more. I have never experienced a data transfer failure with any of the three. This is the one if you need to transfer a lot of data over 2 or more external hard drives at the same time. I’m not saying other companies haven’t caught up with this unit but they hadn’t when I bought the first one. I haven’t felt the need to try any others.

There are certainly a lot of ports but it also includes the Smart Charging Port which is perfect for the current iPhone. I use the other individually controlled on-off ports to charge my headphones, iPad and my old iPhones. So far, it works well and I may buy another one for the office.
